Gabriel García Márquez
Gabriel García Márquez is considered one of the most influential authors in South America andaround the world. He has contributed numerous monumental works to the literary world. His incorporation of magical realism into his writings is greatly responsible for popularizing that literary style(Wikipedia.com).
Gabriel García Márquez was born on March 6, 1928 in Aracataca, Colombia (nobelprize.org). He was raised by his maternal grandparents until his grandfather’s death when GarcíaMárquez was eight years old. He went to live with his parents from that time on, but his grandfather’s strong influences remained with him (Wikipedia.com). His grandfather, Colonel Nicolás Ricardo MárquezMejía, was “a Liberal veteran of the War of a Thousand Days” and his words, such as "You can't imagine how much a dead man weighs," made a strong impression on his grandson as can be seen later in thehis works (themodernword.com; Wikipedia.com).
García Márquez started out his education in a Jesuit college studying law, but later transferred his interest to journalism (nobelprize.org). He spentthe next years traveling and writing articles and short stories for different newspapers and had a novels published (themodernword.com). Two of his most popular works are One Hundred Years ofSolitude, which strongly depicted magical realism, and Love in the Time of Cholera (Wikipedia.com).
García Márquez was a large component of the Latin American Boom of literature. His contributions to theliterary world, as well as his involvement in the movie industry as a screenwriter and film critic, have been extensive. He won a Nobel Prize in 1982 for his literary works and is considered one ofthe “most significant authors of the 20th century,” (Wikipedia.com).
