My article is called “ Food for thought” and I read it in The economist.
It was in a special report about Obesity.
In one line I would say that the article deals with theambivalent part that food and soft drink companies have in the fight against obesity. According to the article their part is ambivalent because on one side they develop nutritious products but on theother side they keep selling unhealthy products.

Companies like Mcdonalds, Coca-cola, KFC and Pepsico keep selling unhealthy products because it’s the duty of these companies to their shareholders tomake profit. And it’s a fact that many unhealthy product are very profitable and many healthy product are not so much.
For example: the sales on soft drinks were 532 billion dollars and the sales onpackaged food were about 2.2 trillion last year and healthy products represented only 7% of that.
On the other hand the companies don’t want to be accused of helping to make people fatter, becausethey know that the government will intervene with new regulations then. So in order to avoid these regulations they develop their own ways to attack the obesity problem.

There are 3 general waysin which big companies that sell unhealthy products try to show they want to help lowering the obesity rates too. You can cut out bad ingredients, add good ones or introduce new and healthier products.1) The first way ; cut out bad ingredients, or for example lower calories or fat rate. A good example of this the “responsibility deal” in England with the Department of Health. In this deal 16companies agreed to cut out 1,5 trillion calories by 2015.
2) You can Also add healthy ingredients, for example; Coca cola has been studying low calorie sweeteners for some years now.
3) Andthe last general way is to introduce new products; in that way nestle has set up a new institute to combine nutitional and biomedical researcj and they try to create food that has a medical benefit....
