Textbook Chapter : 3

Project Organization
2

A project is a temporary work structure that
starts, produces an output or outcome, and then
shuts down.
Project management involves all activities
associated with planning, scheduling, andcontrolling projects.

Project Initiation
4

In this phase, we define directions, priorities,
limitations , and constraints.
Customer is a vital participant in all stages of the
process, not just at the beginning and the end.
Scope creep should be avoided. Project Planning
5

In this phase, we create a blueprint for the scope of
the project and resources needed to accomplish it.
Following steps are involved:
Project definition
Resource planning
Project scheduling
Project tracking and control

Project Assurance

Performance is tracked through monitoring and
controlling changes in the project plans. Customer
surveys, Microsoft Project software, project reviews,
audits etc. can be used.

Project Control
7

In this phase, appropriate communication and
management tools are used to track managerial
performance, process improvements, and customer
satisfaction.
Atypical project control system includes the following:
A project plan
A continuous monitoring system
A reporting system
Timely actions to improve and correct deviations

Project Closure
8

Evaluate customer satisfaction with project deliverables
and assess success and failures that provide learning
for future projects and referrals from satisfied
customers.
Following steps areinvolved:
Project must by signed off by designated persons
Pay all bills and complete financial records
Thank team members and seek recommendations
Examine and document “lessons learned”
Communicate and disseminate project successes and best
practices

Six Sigma Project Reviews
9

Project reviews are status checks that serve to evaluate
progress towards achieving the project plan.
Eachproject should be reviewed after each
phase(Define,Measure,Analyze,Improve,Control) has been
completed.
A typical review agenda includes:
Introduction by Project Champion or Sponsor
Project Team Presentation
Evaluation of phases and capture “lessons learned”.
Closing by Project Champion or Sponsor

Six sigma project teams

Teams are cross-functional.
Teams include several types ofindividuals

Member

Roles and responsibilities

Champions

Senior level managers who lead six sigma projects. They select
projects, set objectives, allocate resources, and mentor teams.

Master Black Belts

Full time six sigma experts responsible for six sigma strategy,
training,mentoring, deployment, and results.

Black Belts

Fully trained six sigma experts involved on a full time basis on
tec hnical issues, selecting team members, conducting training of
green belts, and working with functional managers and process
owners to implement and monitor solutions.

Green
Green Belts

Functional employees who work on projects on a part time basis ,
conduct basicanalyses of data and provide ideas for
improvement.

Team members
ea

Individuals from various functional areas who support specific
va
suppo spec
projects by gathering data or conducting experiments.

People skills
12

Six sigma team members need to have the technical skills to
conduct the analyses required for the DMAIC process.
Shared vision and behavioural skills are important....
