It is known that the educational compulsory system in the UK has some characteristics as being a comprehensive system, havingcompulsory national exams and having grant maintained schools. Those characteristics are the result of three important laws that went through time ago. Do you know which those most important laws are? Tounderstand the actual system of education in the UK, it is necessary to know the Butler Education Act, the Circular 10/65 and the Education Reform Act.
To begin with, the Education Act 1944, known asButler Education Act, changed the education system introducing the Tripartite System, making secondary education free for all pupils and implementing the eleven plus examination. Firstly, this lawintroduced Tripartite System that was consisted in three different types of secondary school: grammar schools, secondary technical schools and secondary modern schools. Secondly, this Act made secondaryeducation free for all pupils for the reason that the Ministry of Education gave direct grant in exchange for accepting a number of pupils in independent schools. Finally, the Butler Education Act putinto practice the eleven plus examination. This exam consisted in select pupils to have gone to the different types of secondary school. As the result of Butler Education Act, the majority ofeducation went to the secondary modern schools and educated and mobilized women and the working class.
To continue with, it is necessary to know The Circular 10/65. This law was issued in 1965 and markedthe abolition of Eleven Plus exam and began converting secondary schools to comprehensive system. First of all, the abolition of antique techniques as the Eleven Plus was followed for the reason thatthe Tripartite System of education was flawed.
