Stereotypes and Emblems of English Speaking Countries
Introduction

Stereotypes and Emblems of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Great Britain is a nation of great traditions. When we think of Britain’s history, we might think of kings and queens, empires, Commonwealth, great Lords and Earls, universities, etc. However, there is much more than that.

There are manyaspects that bring British people together, cultural facts that apply when dealing with a whole country with nations inside: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In fact, each one of the nations in Britain makes them unique and different at the same time: England has its own characteristics as well as Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, a fact that more than separate them, gives those nations the feeling of a united country with their own peculiarities.
A symbol that can be representative of this union of nations within one country is the national flag, called the Union Flag or Union Jack, representing the union of flags of England (red cross of Saint George on white ground), Scotland (white diagonal cross of Saint Andrew on a blue ground) and Ireland (a reddiagonal cross of Saint Patrick on a white ground). The Welsh flag is not represented because by the time the first version of the flag appeared, this nation was already united to England.

Moreover, the Official Coat of Arms is a shield supported by the English Lion on the left and the Unicorn of Scotland on the right. Its full version is now only used by the Queen in her capacity as the Sovereign. Finally, the National Anthem is God Save the Queen (or King, when the occasion so requires) which dates back to the 18th century. It was first performed in London in 1745 but was not adopted as the national anthem till the 19th century:
God saves our gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen!
The Concept of Britishness
A controversial discussion has emerged in Britainthese days with the implantation of a test on Britishness for would-be immigrants, hoping to get British citizenship. The term itself is ambiguous, because there might be as many definitions of Britishness as there are people in the world.
There are some stereotypes that are usually worldwide thought of when dealing with British people. The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress andspeech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for foreign to understand. Nevertheless, there are many more others which are usually said about them such as:
* The weather: when thinking of the British weather, the most spread stereotype is that it is always raining.
* Pubs: the culture of pubs is verypresent and it is understood as to be a consequence of that rainy weather. There are more than 57,000 pubs across the UK. They were first created in Britain during Roman times, when travelers obtain ret and refreshments along the new road networks. Some of the most popular ones nowadays are Red Lion, Road Oak, Rose and Crown, etc.
* Quietness: even though life in those previously mentionedpubs can be really enjoyable, British people are considered to be very quiet and, therefore, that is very hard to begin a conversation with them of you are not well acquaintances.
* Beer: if there is a drink which seems to identify Britain and the British pubs that is beer whether ale, larger or stout. As a matter of fact, it has been popularly claimed that “alcohol has been drunk and servedthroughout the British Isles since the Bronze Age.”

England
The national day of England is St. George’s Day on April 23rd. St George is the patron saint of England and his emblem—a red cross on a white background—forms the English flag. This emblem was adopted by Richard Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century, when the soldiers used it in their tunics to avoid confusion in...
