O’Sullivan Instructions
(50 gram oral glucosetest)

The O’Sullivan test is a screening test for diabetes during pregnancy. Here are the instructions for your test. Scheduling the test Please schedule a lab appointment at a convenient time foryou. A lab appointment is recommended because the timing of your blood test is very important.
Before your test
1. Read and follow these instructions carefully. If you do not follow theinstructions, your test results may not be accurate.
2. You may eat or drink before starting the test.
The test
1. One hour before the blood test, drink the ordered sweet beverage quickly (within 5 to 7minutes). You may chill the drink or have it at room temperature.
2. Do not eat, drink,chew gum or smoke after drinking the sweet beverage. You may have water.
3. Have your blood drawn exactly 60minutes (1 hour) after drinking the sweet beverage.
To make sure that your blood is taken at theright time:
• Be at the lab within 30 minutes of drinking the ordered sweet beverage.
• Tell the labthe exact time you drank the sweet beverage.
• Bring the lab order with you (if you were given one).
After your blood test is taken you may eat and drink as usual. Check with your health careprovider at your next visit to get your results.

Why am I having this test?
This test is being performed to screen for gestation diabetes (GDM) or elevated bloodsugar during pregnancy. Having elevatedblood sugar levels during pregnancy,can affect your baby and delivery. Most pregnant women should have this test performed between 26-28 weeks gestation. Some women may have this test done more thanonce if they areconsidered high risk for having gestational diabetes or if the original test was performedprior to 24 weeks gestation. Your doctor will advise you as needed.
