IRRIGATION
When it comes to the distribution of water, nature has issued California a special challenge. Two-thirds of all precipitation falls in the northern tier of the state; two-thirds of thepopulation lives in Southern California. For nearly 100 years, California has been creating statewide system designed to carry water from where it is to where it is needed.
The city of los Angelescompleted an aqueduct from the Owens River in the southeastern Sierra as early as 1913. In 1941the waters of the Colorado River were brought to the desert regions along California´s southern border, andin the 1960s San Diego linked itself to the river for its metropolitan water supply. Reaching north for its water, Sacramento takes it from Shasta Lake and Lake Oroville, two artificially createdreservoirs. The San Francisco Bay Area draws upon the Aqueduct, originating near Yosemite, serves San Francisco and the Peninsula; it was completed in 1934.
Since California´s Central Valley containsone-sixth of all the irrigated cropland in the United States, agricultural concerns also affect the state´s water divisions. Ever since the early missionaries built zanjas, or open ditches, to bring waterto mission gardens, irrigation has remained a critical issue.
First planned in the 1930s and completed in the early 1970s, the Central Valley Project incorporates three dams (Shasta, Keswick, andFriant) and five major canals to bring the waters of the sacramento, McCloud, Pit, and San Joaquin rivers to the farmlands and interior cities of the Golden State. Completed in 1973, the 440-mileGovernor Edmund G.Brown California Aqueduct runs down the western side of the San Joaquin Valley, from Tracy to Lake Perris in northwestern Riverside County.
