The Berlin Airlift

After World War ll, two powerful nations emerged,
the United States and the Soviet Union. This situation
brought a state of tension, theCold War. The Cold
War caused a lot of tension between this two nations.
One of the causes of this war was the Berlin Airlift.
All this started right away afterWorld War ll, when
Germany was divided into Communist and
Non-Communist zones. The Western Side of Germany
was democratic and the Eastern Side was communist.
Berlin, the capital of Germany was occupied by the
four countries that won World War ll; France,
Britain, the Soviet Union, and the U.S.
Stalin did not want the Westernpowers to come
into Berlin, so he closed every railroad and
highway. The Western powers responded to
Stalin’s actions by giving West Berliners food by
Cargo planesfor more than a year. This plan forced
The Soviet Union to end the blockade.

Nuclear Weapons a Big Part Of The Cold War

Some of the biggestconsequences of the Cold War were nuclear weapons.
The Soviet Union and the United States were competing against each other to see
which country was the mostpowerful. The U.S. was the first country to develop
a nuclear bomb. The Soviet Union in order to not be left behind started to develop
nuclear weapons. Years later, bothnations were really powerful because of the
nuclear weapons they have been developing. Both nations knew this competition
was a threat for both nations and theentire world. They decided to limit nuclear
weapons. In 1991, The U.S. and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms
Reduction Treaty to reduce nuclear weapons.
