The Crusades – Historical Essay

At the ends of the 11th century, appeared one of the most prominent features of the medieval Europe, a social, religious, political and economic setting thatwould give current and future global forms of belief and also developments, the crusades.
The word “crusade” comes from Latin, the religious meaning from “crux – cross”. It refers to the cross on whichJesus was crucified and therefore to go on a “crusade” meant going to fight for Christ. The crusades were series of military campaigns during the later middle Ages, and fought for Christ.. For a long time Muslims allowed Christians to visit Jerusalem. They traveled from Europe to visit this sacred place, but in 1071 a group of Muslims intolerantof Christians, decided to take over the place and abuse all Christians. When Pope Urban II heard what was happening in Jerusalem, convened a speech in France with all the Christian knights and gave them aspeech very passionate about what the enemy was doing in the holy land (Jerusalem) and therefore the Knights were willing to fight and die for Christ.
The first Crusade was in the most importantin1096, there were about 30,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 knights on horseback, commanded by Robert, the oldest son of William the Conqueror. They traveled from Europe to reach Jerusalem finally in 1099,and held the city and the land around it for the next 87 years; this marked the first time significant numbers left to carry their culture and religion abroad. There were eight Crusades, and eachcrusade made a different history but with an only root, these crusades took almost two centuries, and therefore these wars between two religions made lot of effects in every single aspect.
