The God of Small Things is a novel written by Arundati Roy in 1997. The writer focuses her story on the life of an Indian family. The most part of the plot occurs in the town of Ayemenem in Kerala, India. However, Roy’s novel is not a simple storywhich deals with the relationships of a family; it is a complex structure with three different periods of time. Simultaneously, these periods of time are related with three generations of Indian women. Despite Arundati Roy’s novel came out in 1997, the first generation of the novel takes place in the Colonial times; the second generation happens in the Postcolonial times and the third generationcomes about in the Contemporary times. Moreover, another complexity is added to the novel, assuming that, it is not written in chronological order but it is based on Modernism. For this reason, Roy wrote The God of Small Things without following a chronological order, according to the Modernism patterns.

Arundati Roy exposes the disadvantages that the Neocolonialism Institutions have causedin India and its inhabitants. As well as that, we highlight the fact that the colonization has brought the multinationals to control the world. In addition, Roy questions people’s freedom, particularly, women’s, and the injustices they are forced to live. Consequently, this research project will be focused on Indian women. I am going to centre my thesis on showing two different points of view, contrasting Indian women and Spanish women. I am going to verify my thesis showing an example of each country. Firstly, in India, I am going to use some of the feminine characters of the Roy’s novel. Secondly, in Spain, I am going to use some biographical facts of a Spanish woman. The context, in both cases, is extended from the late 19th century until the early 20th century. It was a very hardperiod of time for both countries and which I am going to talk in an accurate way afterwards, above all, demonstrating how was women’s life ruled by a patriarchal society, the religion and the culture.

India is a country placed in the south of Asia and which occupies most part of this continent. India delimits in the north-west with China, with the Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east, in thewest with Pakistan and in the south with the Indic Ocean, Sri Lanka and the Maldives Islands. In addition, India is divided into 28 States and it is also divided in 7 Union Territories. Furthermore, India is the second most inhabited country in the world; it has about 1100 millions of inhabitants. It is also the most democratic country inhabited in the world.
The reason why there are a lot oflanguages and different dialects is because India is a big country. There are thirty countries and, at least, two thousand dialects. In fact, the two official languages accredited by the Indian Constitution and used for the official communization by the National Govern are Hindu and English.
Talking about religion, the most followed is the Hindus 83%, 11% are Muslims, 3% are Christians, 2%are Sikhs and 0, 7% are Buddhists. As far as the percentages are concerned, Hinduism is also the religion followed by the characters of the Roy’s novel. What is more, this religion has not a specific founder and a scripture neither, for this reason it could be described as a way of life more than a religion. In fact, Hinduism is based in the doctrines of karma, reincarnation and transmigration...
