Inspiration and origin
Collins says that the idea for The Hunger Games came to her one day when she was switching between multiple television channels. The lines between a reality show competitionand war coverage "began to blur in this very unsettling way." She also cites the Greek myth of Theseus, in which the city of Athens was forced to send young men and women to Crete to be devoured bythe Minotaur, as inspiration for the nation of Panem; she explains, "Crete was sending a very clear message: 'Mess with us and we'll do something worse than kill you. We'll kill your children.' Collinsalso said that similar stories hit her hard when she was young, since her father fought in the Vietnam War and she was frightened knowing that he was there.
Film adaptation

Lions GateEntertainment acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of The Hunger Games, which is being produced by Nina Jacobson's production company Color Force. Collins adapted the novel for filmherself, and her script was reviewed by screenwriter Billy Ray. It is anticipated to have a PG-13 rating, because of the high action, violent actions and intense situations.
The film will be directed by GaryRoss with Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as the role of Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth as the role of Gale. The filmmakers went into production in late spring 2011 with ananticipated release date of March 23, 2012. A sequel is due to be released on November 22nd, 2011
