Introduction: the object stares back
At first it appears that nothing could be easier than seeing. We just point our eyes where we want them to go, and gather inwhatever there is to see.
The world is flooded with light, and everything is available to be seen.
Seeing does not interfere with the world or take anything from it, and itdoes not hurt or damage anything. Seeing is detached an efficient and rational.
Each one of those ideas are completely wrong, the truth is more difficult: seeing isirrational, inconsistent, and undependable. It is immensely troubled, cousin to blindness and sexuality, and caught up in the threads of the unconscious.
Our eyes are notours to command; they roam where they will and then tell us they have been where we have sent them.
Ultimately seeing alters the thing that is seen and transforms theseer. Seeing is metamorphosis, not mechanism.
EN RESUMEN
The first chapter introduces the problems that best vision, specially the strange connection that links theobserver with the observed.
The second chapter pursues that relation into an odd realm where objects have eyes and can stare back.
Chapter 3 is about the inconstancy ofvision and our helplessness to control how we see the world.
Chapter 4 explores 2 of the most important kinds of visible objects: bodies and faces, bodies especiallythe insides, the parts we cannot see, faces are so elementary
Chapter 5 pursues these questions and proposes that faces are different from all other visible objects inthat they represent he idea of the mind.
