To do this assignment it was necessary to watch a movie and try to link it with our classes and context. Through this work 3 questions are going to be answered regarding, as I already said, Britain and Chilean environment. Approaching to history through movies is a very good option as futures teachers to educate our students about facts and the past.
The questions are:
1. How is thehistorical period portrayed and which influences can be seen nowadays.
The movie I watched was “The Other Boleyn Girl”, a romantic-historical movie that portrays in a sort of soap opera style how and why the Church of England was created by Henry VIII.
The historical period is represented by the settings, the costumes and the name of the character, all of them based in the true story ofthe Tudor period in England. Although it is a new movie (released on 2008) is set in Henry VII’s Castle, England.
The Tudors period is showed as a time where Kings were the owners of the most absolute power and the have the right to do whatever the wanted to. The life of King Henry VII, as the movie shows, it was a life dedicated to himself and to please all his desires, especially thecarnal ones. An attractive and seductive King whose physical conditions made of him a very interesting character, and not only that it is also shown as a party and women lover.
He is shown as a brave man, willing to fight against everyone/thing opposing him, even if it was the so-respected Catholic Church. Besides, in his period most of the best military improvements and advances until that timetook place
In few words the movie is about two sisters: Ann and Mary who peacefully lived in the countryside together with their parents and a younger brother. They had an uncle, Thomas Howard II who wanted to become powerful and irreplaceable figure for the king. To achieve his goal he took advantage of the inability of the England’s Queen, Katherine of Aragon, of giving to the king amale child. The uncle offered Ann to the king to be his mistress and give him the son he wanted so much.
After a short hesitation Ann accepts the offer made by her uncle, she had a strong personality, was very ambitious, smart, and independent; characteristics that far from not attracting the king, intimidated him and moved him away from her. The peak point of this is when the King and Annwent hunting, she took a path known only by her so when the King tried to follow her, had an accident in which was severely injured. Besides the physical harm his ego was also deeper damaged.
The uncle suspicious about Ann’s qualities of doing a good job sent Mary, who was happily recently married, to heal the King’s pain.
The story takes a different direction and Mary became the objectof the King’s desire. She was not pleased with that, she really wanted to be happy with her husband but life had another plans for her, these were living in the King’s court to please and entertain him whenever it was necessary.
Contrary to her sister, Mary was a sweet woman, submissive, good person, caring, and faithful to her family. At the end though, she fells for the king and forgothis husband sending him far away from the court. She got pregnant and had a baby boy, but she had a dangerous pregnancy that forced her to rest the 9 months, at the same time that her sister Ann came back from France, where she had been sent as a punishment after marrying Henry Percy secretly.
Ann had changed in her stay there; she had had become even more seductive and ambitious but hadlearnt the right way to do it. She was brought back with only one purpose: not letting the King being or think about any other woman than her sister Mary. The fact that Mary had had a son meant that he would become England’s King, but Ann had different plans. She started using her charm to seduce the king and getting all that she wanted, regardless all her family told her, she starts seeking for...
