The Presidents
The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander in chief of the Continental Army in 1775.7 The following year, the British were driven from Boston, lost New York City and were defeated at Trenton, NewJersey, to the surprise caused Washington Crossing the Delaware River . Due to its strategy, revolutionary forces captured the two main armies fighting British in the Battle of Saratoga and the Yorktown. In negotiations with Congress, the colonial states and French allies, remained a weak army and a fragile nation amid the threats of disintegration and failure. After leading the American victoryin the War of Independence, resigned his military and returned to life on his plantation of Mount Vernon, an act that brought him even more popularity.
In 1787, he chaired the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the Constitution of the United States and in 1789, was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States. He tried to create a nation capable of sustaining peace with itsneighbors. His Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793 provided the basis for avoiding any involvement in foreign conflicts. He supported plans to build a strong central government by paying the national debt, implementing an effective tax system and the creation of a national bank. Washington avoided the war and had a decade of peace with Great Britain with the Jay Treaty was signed in 1795, despiteintense opposition Democratic-Republican Party. Although never officially joined the Federalist Party supported its program. In 1793 he founded the new federal capital, Washington named in his honor, though the presidential residence there would not be passed until the time of his successor in office, John Adams. Washington voluntarily resigned to be elected for a third term (for which supportwould not have missed), considering that the perpetuation of a president in office would be detrimental to the constitutional liberties, and established a practice broken only by Franklin D. Roosevelt. His two terms of government established many policies and traditions that exist to this day.
Before the end of his term, Washington retired to civilian life again, setting an important precedent ofpeaceful transition which has been an example not only in America but also in other future republics. The Washington's Farewell Address was an introduction to republican virtue and a stern warning against partisanship, sectionalism, and involvement in foreign wars. He was awarded the first Congressional Gold Medal in appreciation of the House in 1776.8
Washington died in 1799 mainly due totreatment for pneumonia, which included calomel and bloodletting, resulting in a combination of shock, due to the loss of five pints of blood and suffocation and dehydration. Henry Lee III was who delivered the eulogy, which said Washington was "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen" .9
