Chapter 1

1. Four steps of the writing process & components:
a) Planning: Choosing your topic, Narrowing your topic, Consider your audience, determine your purpose, gather information, outline the paper.
b) Drafting: Choosing a mode, crafting a thesis statement, topic sentences, and a concluding sentence.
c) Revising: Revising for ideas, revising for style, revisingfor correctness.
d) Publishing: Choosing a title, making a neat copy.
2. Be able to make an outline:
[I don't know which type of outline he'll want on the test; here's an example of the both of them.]
a)Topic outline:
I. By topic
A. References on topic
B. Passages about topic
C. Commentaries for topic
II. By passage
A. Key verse or main point
B. Familiarization
1. Reading overand over
2. Memorizing

b) Sentence outline:
I. One method of Bible study is to study a topic that interests you.
A. First, find references on the topic.
B. Then read other passages about the topic.
C. Finally, research various Bible commentaries for further information on the topic.
II. Another method of Bible study is to study a particularpassage.
A. First, find a key verse or the main point of the passage.
B. Then further familiarize yourself with the passage.
1. Read the passage over and over.
2. Memorize parts (or all) of the passage.
C. Next, locate related passages.
D. Finally, look up key words in a Bible dictionary.
3. Know the different ways of organizing a paragraph:
a) Chronological order: A presentation ofevents in the order of their occurrence.
b) Spatial order: A description according to how something is arranged in physical layout.
c) Order of importance: A move from least important to most important or vice versa.
d) Cause-and-Effect order: An explanation of a cause and its effects and its causes.
e) Comparison-and-Contrast order: A description of two or more persons or things that emphasizespoints of similarity and points of difference.
4. Know what a thesis statement is:
a) A thesis statement is similar to a topic sentence but it is the main idea of your entire piece.


Chapter 2

1. Be able to list, identify, use and define the eight parts of speech:
a) Nouns: Names a person, place, thing, or idea.| A passenger boarded the ship.
b) Pronouns: Substitutes for a noun or for anoun and its modifiers.| The science teacher said that he wanted the experiment completed in time.
c) Verbs: Main words of the predicate and often the most important words in a sentence. They show either the action of the subject, or the state or condition of the subject.| Candice works in the afternoon.
d) Adjectives: Modify or describe nouns or pronouns.| The pretty is very pretty.
e)Adverbs: Modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.| Monique examined each coin carefully.
f) Prepositions: Relates its object to another word in the sentence.| Children were playing in the sand.
g) Conjunctions: Connect words or groups of words in a sentence.| Jason and Amanda are missionaries to Ivory Coast, West Africa.
h) Interjections: Can appear along with a sentence in which it takes no realpart, or it can stand alone punctuated as a sentence.| Sure, I can help.
2. Know the types of the eight parts of speech:
a) Nouns
1. Common nouns: Name general persons, places, things, or
ideas. *school, dog*
• Count nouns: Can be singular and plural in form and can
be counted. *drink, rock*
• Noncount nouns: Are always singular in form; they cannot be
made plural, andcannot be counted. *water, sand*
2. Proper nouns: Name specific persons, places, things, or ideas;
proper nouns are always capitalized. *China, King's Christian, School*
3. Compound nouns: Are combinations of two or more words.
• Closed compound: written as one word. *headphones*
• Open compound: written as two words. *yard sale*
• Hyphenated compound: one hyphenated word. *great-...
