“Who killed Saville Kent?” In this book they analyze and explain the whole investigation that Mr. Whicher and his working partners made to get to the end. Kate Summerscale writes very indepth about the British society in the 1860’s. She showed how people in those days lived: their culture, architectures, art creations, and how they saw their homes and other traditions.
In the1860’s, detectives were not seen as being important in society since the art of detection and investigation was new in that time. In addition, because technology was very poorly developed, detectives had tolook for clues and get deeply involved in the murder suspects’ life, by watching them and interrogating them to try and match them to the case. This was very uncomfortable, for the society in thattime was a very reserved one. With all the hints and clues, Mr. Whicher concluded that it was impossible for someone living outside the house to commit the murder.
After five long years ofinvestigation, a trial opened, allowing the investigation to develop further. During the trial, Saville Kent’s sister, Constance Kent, declared that she murdered her brother, Saville Kent at night while therest of the people were sleeping, excluding her brother and partner in crime, William Kent. They killed Saville because they were jealous, so they waited for the perfect moment to cut his throat with arazor. Finally, she went to jail and Saville’s father Samuel died.
