Threats of Pollution
Pollution is the presence or incorporation into the environment of substances or toxic elements that are harmful to humans or ecosystems (living). There are different types of pollution, the main to be addressed are: water pollution, air, land/ soil, noise, among others. The existence of pollution in our environment has a detrimental effect on the whole environment and, therefore, on mankind. Pollution is the degradation of habitat through the introduction of, usually human or organic chemicals, genes or radiation (radioactivity, artificial light), altering more or less important in the functioning of the ecosystem.
Pollution can have a significant impact on health and the biosphere as evidenced by exposure to pollutants and global warming transforms the atmosphereof the Earth and its ecosystem, resulting in the emergence of unknown diseases, migration of certain species or their extinction if they can’t adapt to their new biophysical environment.
It was after the Second World War, an awareness of the impact of human activities on the environment was created, along with the birth of environmentalism and the ecology. Environmental concerns led governmentsto take measures to limit the ecological footprint of human populations and human activities to counter contamination.
Air pollution
The smog that hovers over cities in the form of air pollution is the most common and obvious. However, there are different types of pollution, visible and invisible, that contribute to global warming. In general, air pollution is considered any substance introducedinto the atmosphere by people which then have a detrimental effect on living things and the environment.
Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is the pollutant that is causing further warming of the Earth. While all living things emit carbon dioxide when breathing, it is generally considered pollutant when associated with cars, planes, power plants and other human activities that require the use offossil fuels such as gasoline and natural gas. During the past 150 years, these activities have sent, into the atmosphere, an amount of carbon dioxide sufficient to increase levels above where it had been for previous years.
There are other greenhouse gases such as methane (which comes from sources as swamps and gas emitted by livestock) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were used forrefrigerants and aerosol propellants until they were banned by its detrimental effect on the ozone layer of the Earth. Another pollutant, associated with climate change, is sulfur dioxide, a component of smog. One of the main characteristics of sulfur dioxide and other chemicals that are closely related is the cause of acid rain. However, they also reflect light when released in the atmosphere, whichkeeps sunlight out and causes Earth to cool. Volcanic eruptions can spew massive amounts of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which sometimes causes a cooling lasting several years.
Industrialized countries have taken steps to reduce the levels of sulfur dioxide, smog and smoke to improve the health of its inhabitants. However, one of the results, not expected until recently, is that levels oflower sulfur dioxide could actually worsen global warming. Just as sulfur dioxide from volcanoes can cool the planet by blocking the passage of sunlight, reducing the amount of this compound present in the atmosphere to pass more sunlight, which heats the Earth. This effect is magnified when high amounts in the atmosphere of other greenhouse gases because additional heat is retained.
Most peopleagree that the fight against global warming, should take a series of measures. At the individual level, less use of cars and planes, recycling and environmental protection are measures that reduce the carbon footprint of a person, that is, the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere due to the actions of each individual. On a broader level, governments are taking steps to limit...
