1. Define the city historically, socially and physically (Kostof p, 37)



These are the premises that according to Spiro Kostof, delineate what a city is, regardless of the origin, the birthplace, the form or their founder.
a. Energized crowding: this does not have to do with absolute size or numbers; it has to do with settlement density.
b. Urbanclusters: Some sort of hierarchy must exist.
c. Physical circumscription: Whether material or symbolic, to separate those who belong in the urban order from those why do not.
d. Differentiations of uses: cities are places where there is a specialize of work
e. Urban resources: Cities are places favored by a source of income.
f. Written records: It is trough writing that they will tally their goods,put down the laws, and establish title to property—in the final analysis a city is a construct of ownership.
g. City and countryside: a city must have a territory that feeds them and which they protect and provide services for.
h. Monumental framework: cities are distinguished by a some kind of monumental definitions.
i. Buildings and people: cities are places made up of buildings and people.Originally the land that’s now known as Tijuana was occupied by the The Kumeyaay (Kumiai), also known as Tipai-Ipai, Kamia. These were hunter-gatherers that strived in this land until the Europeans colonizers came. These explorers, in particularly the Spanish, such as Junipero Serra, came and settled in the area near San Diego around 1770. Urban Settlement begun around 1880’s and the city wasofficially founded in July 11th 1889.

2. Explore the preconditions / requirements of the city.
Tijuana is the western-most city of Mexico and consequently all Latin America. The city is nestled among hills, canyons, and gullies. The central part of the city lies in a valley through which flows the channeled Tijuana River. The city gets their water supply likeall of the cities form this region, from the Colorado River.

3. Examine the levels of social and technical sophistication in the city.
Tijuana like other cities is divided into neighborhoods mostly by the socio-economic status of the individual. But in reality due to the influx of migrant wanting to cross the border start-up settlements have sprawled all over the outskirts of the city wherethe potential of a temporal, nomadic urbanism is supported by a very sophisticated social organization. Hundreds of dwellers, called “parachuters,” invade, en masse, large public (sometimes private) vacant properties. As these urban guerillas parachute into the hills of Tijuana’s edges, they are organized and choreographed by what are commonly called “urban pirates.” The famous architect TeddyCruz has researched and worked with these strange conditions that Tijuana presents. “Habitation happens first and infrastructure follows.” He says. Even though it might not what it truly deserves.


4. Explain how technology helped or hindered the development of the city.
The building of a railroad, from 1906 to 1919, to connect the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego tothe east led to a great jump in the tourism and recreation industry of Tijuana. The railroad crossed the border in Tijuana and Tecate, and the increased traffic opened up a world of commerce and trade, it brought many opportunities to Tijuana. Tijuana became an outlet for Southern Californians. They flocked to Tijuana and the surrounding area to experience the fun and entertainment. Not longafter, racetracks and casinos sprung up. They helped support Tijuana’s economy during the Mexican Revolution. This was the very early phase and begging of Tijuana’s development.
