Tintoretto
(September 29, 1518 ¬¬¬¬¬– May 31, 1594)
Jacopo Robusti was a Venetian painter and draughtsman, major representative of the school of mannerism, the transitional style betweenRenaissance and Baroque. He took the name Tintoretto from his father's profession of dyer, “tintore” in Italian.
At first inspired by the work of Michelangelo, including the obligatory athleticfigures, Tintoretto soon developed a style of his own, characterized by expressive use of colors and maximum use of contrast between dark and light, for which he leaned heavily on the technique madeavailable by Caravaggio for chiaroscuro.
Jacopo married Faustina de Vescovi in 1550 and they had two sons and five daughters. Two sons Domenico and Marco, and also his daughter Marietta all assisted him inhis studio.
Most productive between 1564 and his death in 1594, part of his work from this period was executed by students in his studio under his supervision. He designed and worked on a number ofcommissions for the Doge's Palace, and on an outstanding cycle of paintings for the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice, which are still in their original location. Tintoretto died on May 31st 1594. He hadsuffered from severe stomach pains and fever and is buried in the church of the Madonna dell'Orto by the side of his daughter Marietta.

Frecuentaba la compañía del joven pintor Andrea Schiavone, cuatro años menor que él. Tintoretto ayudó a Schiavone gratis en sus pinturas murales; y en muchas otras ocasiones posteriorestrabajó sin retribución, y de esta manera triunfaba a la hora de obtener encargos. Las dos pinturas murales más tempranas conocidas de Tintoretto, hechas, como otras, prácticamente sin retribución,se dice que fueron El festín de Belshazzar y una Lucha de caballería. Ambas han desaparecido hace tiempo, así como todos sus frescos, tarde o temprano.
