Japanese culture is the result of a historical process that begins with the waves of immigration originating from the continent of Asia and the Pacificislands, followed by a strong cultural influence from China and then a long period of isolation from the world (sakoku)from the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji Era beginning in the late nineteenth century, where it receives a huge foreigninfluence that accrues after the end of World War II. This resulted in a different culture than other Asian cultures.

[pic]Japanese cuisine has a long culinary past has evolved into asophisticated dining refined and specialized for each station. It issimilar to China over food staples or shushoku (主食?), which arebasedon five foods rich in carbohydrates (五谷: 米, 麦, 粟, 豆, 黍or 稗): rice, wheat and oats (plants of the genus Setaria) and common bean and millet (Echinochloa plants of thegenus). Plates,known as okazu (おかず?) have the function to flavor the main meal, and usually are salted.
A standard Japanese meal is always a cup of Japanese rice(gohan) and shushoku, and accompanying tsukemono (pickle), acupof soup and a variety of dishes okazu as fish, meat, vegetables, etc.. Also has a habit of naming the foods depending on the amount of okazu accompanying rice and soup. The simplestis the ichijū-ISSAI (一 汁 一菜? "soup, a plate"), but the traditional food is the ichijū-sansai (一 汁 三 菜? "one soup, three dishes),where each dish is performed with a different cooking technique.Also noteworthy isthat, as Japan is an island nation, seafood is widely consumed.
