Oral exposition: Valentine’s Day in the United states
In the following oral exposition, I am going to talk about the very well known celebration called Valentine’s Day in the United States.Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, for instance the USA, it is the traditional day onwhich lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers and eating choclate. The holiday is named after two Christian martyrs named Valentine which lived inacient Rome and when they died, they were buried in Via Flaminia, at the countryside near Rome on February 14.
To start with, the day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of lovenotes in the form of "valentines". Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the love angel, Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely givenway to mass-produced greeting cards. As far as I know, the sending of Valentines was a fashion in the nineteenth-century Great Britain, that later that fashion went to the USA when, in 1847, a womancalled Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on the British models. Moreover, the popularity of Valentine cards in the 19thcentury in America, produced the popularity of the Hallmark cards that were bought buy lovers to express their mutual love. That is why the Valentines holiday was called the ‘Hallmark Holidays’.Actually, the U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion Valentines are sent each year worldwide,making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas.
