Values
to the Yanomamo of the south American jungle, the value of fierceness is very important, and many situations bring this out.
For instance, club fights result in cases in which a wife has been caught in an affair with and other man. in these duels one man holds a ten-foot club, steadies himself by leaning on the club, and then exposes his head for a blow from the opponent's club. afterthat the positions are reversed. the majority of these duels end up as free-for-alls, with everyone clubbing everyone else. facilities sometimes result but not every often because the headmen of the different groups atand by with bows drawn ready to kill anyone who delivers an intectionally lethal blow.the scalps of the older men often cotains as many as a dozen enormous , angry scars, which arefully displayed on the possessors´ proudly shaved heads (chagnon, 1977).
around the plenet Americans are considered aggresive and prone to violence, and yet they are amateurs compared to the values of fierceness and violence.
as this illustration suggests, values very from one culture to another, but all cultutes have them. values are general convictions about what is good or bad, right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate. values are abstract, stating broad behavior in specific situations. Americans tend to embrece the value of patriotism. Norms associated with patriotismspecify that they shuld stand up, face the flag, and sing when the national anthem is played in public. values content of norms.
if a culture surch as the Yanomamö values fierceness and engage in violence. when a culturesuch as the Arapeshof the South pasific values intimate, gentle interpersonal relations, its norms will emphasize such activities as conscientious, , loving child care and extreme afforts to avoid interpersonal conflict (Mead, 1963).
while values influence the development of norms, the "fit" between the two is not always a neat, one-to-one relationship by definition values are abstract and normsare specific. thus, it is not surprising that quite different norms can be derived from a given value. the American emphasis on competition is a case in point.one high school football coach might tell his players that they should do anything to win. "the other team is the enemy out there," he explains. "They’re trying to stop you from winning, and you´ve got to punish them for that." He teacheshis players a number of illegal moves that can knock opponents out of action and yet are difficult for a referee to detect. In contrast, another coach tells the team " to play hard and clean. Win or lose, if you can say at the end of the game that you´ve given it your all, i´ll feel I've done my job."
In some situations people may be confronted with conflicts between values and associated norms.for some doctors and lawyers such a conflict develops if they establish a private practice. Both professions offer potential wealth and, for that reason, many young doctors and lawyers decide to concentrate on patients and clients who can pay fat fees. On the other hand, some of these professionals are also concerned about providing good medical care or legal assistance to people who cannot affordto pay for it. A resolution of this value conflict is reached when a doctor or lawyer establishes a policy about fees. Will everyone be charged a high rate? Will the patient’s or client’s income be taken into account? Will the doctor or lawyer accept people who simply cannot pay at all?
