TECHNICAL VOCABULARY INTERNET

1. ADSL: (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) - A method for moving data over regular telephone lines that is much faster than a regular telephone connection. A common configuration of ADSL would allow a subscriber to download at speeds of up to 1.544 megabits per second, and upload at speeds of up to 128 kilobits per second.

2. Address Bar is a textfield near the top of a Web browser window that displays the URL of the current webpage

3. AdWords service of Advertisement with google

4. Anonymous FTP: To connect to an FTP server without providing a personal login ID and password. Often permitted by large host computers who are willing to openly share some of their system files to outside users who otherwise would not be able to login.

5. Ajax: is a combination of Web development technologies used for creating dynamic websites. While the term "Ajax" is not written in all caps like most tech acronyms, the letters stand for "Asynchronous JavaScript And XML." Therefore, websites that use Ajax combine JavaScript and XML to display dynamic content.

6. Applet: A small Java program that can be placed (embedded) in an HTMLpage. Applets differ from full-fledged Java applications in that they are not allowed to access files and serial devices (modems, printers, etc.) on the local computer, and are prohibited from communicating with other computers across a network

7. Apache: Apache is the most popular Web server software. It enables a computer to host one or more websites that can be accessed over the Internetusing a Web browser.

8. ATM "Asynchronous Transfer Mode." Most people know of ATMs as automated teller machines -- those friendly boxes that allow you to withdraw cash from your bank or credit account while charging you a ridiculous surcharge for the service.

9. Avatar Generally speaking, an avatar is the embodiment of a person or idea.

10. Back-up A resource that is or can beused as a substitute when a primary resource fails or when a file has been corrupted

11. Bandwidth: The transmission capacity of the lines that carry the Internet's electronic traffic. The greater the bandwidth, the more data that can be moved at one time. Lack of bandwidth can impose severe limitations on the ability of the Internet to quickly deliver information.

12. BitTorrent is apeer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol designed to reduce the bandwidth required to transfer files. It does this by distributing file transfers across multiple systems, thereby lessening the average bandwidth used by each computer.

13. Bookmark: A pointer to a Web site of interest. Within browsers, pages can be "bookmarked" for quick reference, rather than remembering and typing thecomplete URL in the address bar.

14. Browser: A software program that is used to view websites and other Internet resources on the WWW.

15. Broadcast A single message addressed to all nodes on a network.

16. Buffer A temporary memory for data, normally used to accommodate the difference in the rate at which two devices can handle data during a transfer.

17. BUS topology:Network wiring commonly used by Ethernet in which all nodes on the network see all packets.

18. Captcha: is program used to verify that a human, rather than a computer, is entering data. Captchas are commonly seen at the end of online forms and ask the user to enter text from a distorted image.

19. Cache: A section of memory or the Hard Drive where data can be stored for rapid or frequentaccess.

20. Client :A computer program that uses the services of another computer program. Software that extracts information from a server; your auto-dial phone is a client, and the phone company is its server.
