WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT?
During the last two decades we have witnessed how the world, from China to the United States have been torn down global barriers and coined the well-know term which is globalization. Weinstein (2005) said “globalization refers to a process— an evolution of closer economic integration by way of increased trade, foreign investment, and immigration ”.
Due to thehigher integration and the torn down of barriers, the crossing borders has significantly increased; making new terms in the business field pop up with a higher importance such as international management.
There are many studies and definitions of International-management that has inspired the search for a better understanding of this expression and the uses in the field. According to Boddweyn,Brian and Martinez (2004) a key point of discussion has been whether the traditional definition of international management - namely, management crossing borders - should be challenged; another is whether related expressions, such as global management, do improve our understanding of what international management means” .
According to Boddweyn, Brian and Martinez (2004) “international managementapplies not only to the unidirectional crossing of national borders but also to the two-directional learning experienced by managers outside their home environments; and "global" and "transnational" add a mental mindset to the more material content of the crossing of borders by factors of production (including knowledge) and firms; the the study of international management has benefited from the"transnational" perspective of considering both "global" and "local" threats and opportunities, and "management" is a socially constructed activity that takes place in all sorts of organizations - private, public, for profit or not, at home, abroad and supranational” .
Although there is still residual debate about the boundaries of international management, international management is defined asencompassing the sub-areas of international strategy, human resource management, organizational theory, organizational behavior, ethics, and industrial relations, and joint ventures (Mendenhall, Beaty, & Oddou, 1993; Peterson, 2004)
To simply definitions and to create our own criteria, we could say that international management is the practice of managing business operation outside the naturalenvironment in more than one country. It’s important to say that the international management has different environmental factors or forces such as culture, economics or politics that affect it directly and indirectly.
In this particular time we are going to focus only in one aspect, the culture international management, Understanding that “Culture is a learned and shared human patterns ormodels for living; day- to-day living patterns. Where these patterns and models pervade all aspects of human social interaction, Culture is mankind's primary adaptive mechanism" Damen, L. (1987).
It’s important to realize that in each continent, each country, each subregion, there are different cultures that can affect negatively or positive the international management. Knowing business protocolsand business practices will be helpful to avoid in a different environment the intangibles obstacles no matters the situation. A clear example is when Chevrolet was unsuccessful at marketing the Chevy Nova in Mexico, and the result was lost revenue because in Spanish, “No va” means “it doesn’t go.” The American Motor Corporation named one of its products the “Matador,” to create images of strengthand virility. But “Matador” means “killer” in Puerto Rico, where the traffic fatality rate is exceedingly high. It is therefore imperative to conduct an evaluation of names prior to introducing a product on the market; Business Intelligence Journal (2010).
In the other hand the most uncontrollable factor that affects international management is politics. This is an intangible force that could...
