What Would It Be Like If Women Win

The Women’s Liberation Movement was created in the 1960’s and lasted throughout the 1970’s. Gloria Steinem became the spokeswoman for themovement; relaxing the traditional sex roles for women and men, and the right of women to control their own reproductive lives, and the abolition of sexist laws and practices. The overall climate ofliberalization in the United States during the 60’s: the Civil Rights Movement, Student movement and anti-war protesting. Women jumped in the boat. Tired the sexual hypocrisy and the traditional womenroles of boring housewives, child bearers, catering to their husbands, and lower salaries because of gender. Like Steinem states in the first paragraph, “Women don’t want to exchange places with men.”We only want to change the economic system to one based on merit.
Men assume women want to imitate them, which was what white people assumed about blacks. That is not the case; Steinem just wantedfree access to good jobs and descent pay for the bad ones women have been performing all along, like housework. But receiving a wage, because it truly is a lot of hard work or a percentage of theirhusband’s paycheck. Steinem believes that a lot of the country’s problems are because of machismo. The old fashion idea that men are violent and with violence they achieve victory; that violent andmacho attitude is what’s happening in Vietnam and in the streets in our own country: the police brutality and segregation. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his Declaration of Independence from the War inVietnam also mentions this. How the American Government are hypocrites, dropping bombs for peace while their people are dying of hunger and being racially discriminated. She also says that it doesn’t meanwomen are more moral than men but we’re uncorrupted by power.
