Zoologist

You do not need to work in a zoo to be a zoologist. Zoologists are scientists who
study animals. They want to know everything about animals. They look at how they
behave, what they eat, whatthey look like, and how they evolved.
Some zoologists do work in zoos. They study the animals kept there and care for
them. Zoologists educate the public about animals and what can be done topreserve
them. For many endangered species life in a zoo is necessary to save them from
extinction. Zoologists work to make the zoo as close to living in the wild as possible
for the animals there.This increases the chances of the animals surviving and
breeding successfully.
Some zoos have been very successful at reintroducing animals into the wild.
Zoologists set up special areas inthe animal's natural habitat. There the animals can
learn the behaviors and skills they will need to live on their own. The zoologists keep
track of the animals after their release to see how theyare doing.
Other zoologists work in the wild. They may travel to distant corners of the world.
They may discover new species that have never been studied before. They observe
animals in theirnatural habitat. Scientists were surprised at first when they saw some
animals, such as chimpanzees, using tools. They were even more surprised when
they saw the animals pass down this learnedbehavior from generation to generation.
Most of the studies carried on by zoologists only last a few months or year at most.
This gives them enough time to gather specimens, videos, and otherdata. They may
spend years analyzing it. Others zoologists conduct studies that last many years. This
kind of study lets them see animals behave throughout their lives and across
generations.Scientists estimate that there are still thousands of undiscovered species in the wild.
