C-TPAT
It seeks to strengthen the chain of supply and the national safety across a major commitment on the part of the involved ones in the chain of the logistics between Mexico and The UnitedStates. Through this initiative, CBP is asking businesses to ensure the integrity of their security practices and communicate and verify the security guidelines of their business partners within the supplychain.
By extending the United States' zone of security to the point of origin, the customs‐trade partnership allows for better risk assessment and targeting, freeing CBP to allocate inspectionalresources to more questionable shipments.
Begun in November 2001 with just seven major importers as members and later on the partnership has grown. Today more than 10,000 certified partners have beenaccepted into this program. When they join the anti-terrorism partnership, companies sign an agreement to work with CBP to protect the supply chain, identify security gaps and implement specificmeasures and best practices.
As a part of the process, CBP C-TPAT specialists and the C-TPAT applicant will jointly conduct a validation of the company’s supply chain security procedures. The validationprocess is essential to verify the company’s commitment to the program.
C-TPAT members are considered as low risk and therefore less likely to be examined. This is based on the security profile of thecompany although on the past compliance history and on the validation of a sample international supply chain.
