16 th U.S. President (1861-1865), who led the Union to victory in the Civil War and abolished slavery.
Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 near Hodgenville (Kentucky).
After changing their placeof residence several times with his parents, became independent and moved to Louisiana in 1831. He later returned to Illinois and settled in New S
alem, a newly created community along the SangamonRiver, where he worked in the construction of a railway line and a shop. He earned the respect of his neighbors and was elected captain of his company in the war against the Indians kept Sauk led byBlack Hawk in 1832.
In 1833 he began studying law.
Lincoln was elected to the Illinois Whig Party in 1834, and held his seat until 1841. He soon emerged as one of the leaders of the party and was oneof those who proposed moving the state capital to Springfield, where he established himself in 1837. He began to practice law in 1836.
Lincoln was against slavery and in 1837 was one of the twomembers of the lower house of state who signed a protest against it. Federal elected to Congress in 1846, noted for his outspoken criticism of the war against Mexico and the formulation of a plan forgradual emancipation in the Federal District of Columbia. However, was not abolitionist. Respecting the right of states to settle their own affairs, was dedicated just to keep from spreading slavery.
In1849 he returned to Springfield to continue practicing. But in 1854, due to their amazement at the Kansas-Nebraska Act (for the introduction of slavery in the northwest) of Senator Stephen A. Douglas,decided to return to politics. Clearly demonstrating their opposition to the annulment of the Missouri Compromise, he argued that this was a wrong measure because slavery was unjust in itself. Thefollowing year he ran for U.S. Senate, but seeing that he could win support to Lyman Trumbull, a Democrat who also opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act championed by Douglas.
