Nelson Mandela
In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, to life imprisonment. Spent 27 years in prison, most of which was confined to theprison on Robben Island. After his release on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations for a multiracial democracy in South Africa, which was achieved in1994 with the first democratic elections by universal suffrage. Mandela won the election and was president from 1994 to 1999; often giving priority to reconciliation. Hereceived more than 250 international awards for four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
Robben Island
is an island in Table Bay, 12 km off the coast of CapeTown, Western Cape Province, South Africa. The name is Dutch for 'Seal Island'. The island is nearly round with a diameter of about 1 km, is flat and rises a few metersabove sea level, has an area of 5.07 km ² (507 hectares).From the late seventeenth century, Robben Island was used to isolate certain groups of people, in most cases theprisoners, at first its first inhabitants were permanently native leaders of the Dutch colonies, especially from Indonesia. After a failed rebellion of Grahamstown in 1819,during the fifth Xhosa War, the British colonial government sentenced African leader Makanda Nxele to meet life in this island, dying on the shores of Table Bay while tryingto escape. The island was used as a leper colony between 1836 and 1931. But his recent fame comes for being during the twentieth century partly a prison where politicalprisoners were detained by the apartheid regime. Among these prisoners are highlighted Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Robert Sobukwe and Kgalema Motlanthe.
