American Influence around the world

THE UNITED STATES IS CONSIDERED A GLOBAL SUPER POWER THAT EXERTS WIDE –REACHING POLITICAL, MILITARY AND ECONOMIC INFLUENCE IN WESTERN EUROPE AND IN OTHERS AREAS IN THE WORLD. AS THE LEADING POWER OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, THE UNITED STATES PLAYS AN ACTIVE ROLE IN LATIN AMERICA. [2]

• Military strength:

The United States has military basis indifferent strategic areas around the world including Africa, the Middle East, Central America, South East Asia, and Australia. However most of its overseas forces are concentrated in Western Europe under provisions of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). - 1949

The NATO is a military alliance (United States, Canada, Greece, Turkey and most Western European nations) whichguarantees the defense of member nations. [2] [8]

• Economic strength:

The powerful economy of the United States generates its political and military strength, allows it to be the world´s leading producer and the world´s greatest importer and exporter of goods.

Most of America´s economic influence is also extended through foreign investments, as many American businesses and industriesare operating all over the world.

Also contributing to America´s economic power is the status of the dollar as the world´s chief international currency. The dollar is used for most international trading, and for practically all lending and borrowing transactions.

Third World countries rely on American investment to stimulate employment and industrial growth. These countries’ economicgains, however, are accompanied by the loss of economic power and independence. In developing countries, where economic conditions are backward, American firms play a dominant role. Firms can use their economic power to influence foreign governments into adopting policies that serve American political and economic interests.

In industrial countries as well, the United States has oftenused its economic power to achieve its political aims.

The United States is considered as a leading producer and exporter of technology, contributing to worldwide economic growth. It exports more computer systems and electric machinery and invests more money in technological research than any other country. [2]

• Overseas dominions

When the American Revolution officially ended withthe 1783 Treaty of Paris, Great Britain ceded the area of the thirteen original colonies to the new nation of the United States of America. Over the course of the next 134 years, the United States gradually added territory, through purchase, treaties, and as the result of wars, until in 1917 it reached the size it is today.

American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Islands are all territoriesof the United States. Washington, D.C. and the Northern Mariana Islands are commonwealths. Puerto Rico was once a territory, but is now a commonwealth.

Territories and commonwealths are partially self-governing areas that have not been granted statehood. The indigenous people of these areas are citizens of the United States.

These areas may have one non-voting delegate in the House ofRepresentatives.
