1. Why does the Varsity team lose to the JV team?
The Varsity team had the best rowers in strength, conditioning and technique. They wereexpected to perform well together, but he Junior Varsity team, which were not suppose to be as strong, keep beating them. The Varsity appeared to be slowing down. The reason they keep losing may bethat the Varsity boat’s members had the best technical skill and conditioning among the 16 rowers, but no one was classified as a leader while several were labeled as team disrupters. The JuniorVarsity boat’s members, in contrast, had virtually no team disrupters. They didn’t joined together as a team, instead they all thought they were the best rowers individually and that they were the only onesreally rowing. They were not motivated at all; they even wanted the season to end.
2. What should Coach P. have done differently earlier in the season to resolve this problem? At exactly whatpoint should he have intervened differently?
When he chose the team members the two guys with the greatest sheer strength were placed into the JV boat due to their performance in the seat races. Ithink that the coach shouldn’t just base his decision in the results in the seat races. He should have pay attention in having team members with sheer strength in both teams. At the end, the onlyimportant is not strength and conditioning, all teams must have at least a member that works like a motivator with constant sheer for the whole team. The union between the team members is what really makesthe team strong, multiplying their efforts and making them win the race.
