A Legacy of Honor

The biography of my grandparent is a life story that I specially admire the most because is full of success and honesty. My grandparent was a man of honor, for him a man’s word was more valuable than anything in the world. One of thecharacteristics I notice while doing my interviews was that all my interviewers have really nice comments about my grandparent, but the one most repeated was that he was such a great family man. For him his family was everything and the first thought in his mind. He took caring about his family very seriously, he didn’t want anyone in the family suffer from anything. My grandparent was very responsible withhis family, he would never let a family alone in case of problem, and he was the first one helping and the one with the best solution. One anecdote my mom told me and I also remember, when my parents were divorcing I was 7 years old and my mom was going through a lot and she had to start working. Since my grandparent notice all this he asked her if she wanted to go back to his house or what sheneeded? how can he help her to make her life easier. My mom told him that she wanted a truck to be able to work and take us to school, in this kind of problems my grandfather always was the first on to help. I didn’t really understand everything that was going out in my life at that time, but I still remember we went in a old car to my grandparent house, and then returned home in a new truck,which I still recall the smell and how comfortable it was. My grandparent acted very fast in helping my mom, also my mom told me he supported us economically. Now if he was alive I really would like to thank him for helping my mom in that critical moment in her life, and that I admire him for that kind of contributions to our family.
My grandfather name was Guillermo Castro Hernandez; he wasborn in June 13, 1929 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. His parents Genaro Castro and Martina Hernandez raise him in a little town called Jasso in San Luis Potosi. His father Genaro was a farmer specializes in growing corn and wheat and beans. As a child my grandfather was very active he loved playing soccer with his friends. Also he was very good with the trompo, my uncle Gonzalo Castro once told memy grandfather knew how to make trompos and he would make him and my other uncles trompos; he would teach them how to do different tricks with the trompo, like the boomerang, la vuelta al mundo. As my grandfather Guillermo was growing up he started to learned and developing his skills in agriculture, carpenter, and builder. I have never being on the ranch my grandfather was rise, but my mom didand she showed me some pictures of a beautiful ranch. She pointed at a picture to show me a fence he builded as a teenager. At that time it was very common that kids would stay home to work and help support the family, my grandfather only finished elementary. Everyone called my grandfather Memo. My grandfather Memo got married at the age of 19 years old with Maria Elena Flores Rivera, who was18 years old. My mom told me that they knew each other in a very curious way, because my grandfather family lived in other ranch just a little far from my grandfather ranch, and she worked in her family business where they selled supplies for farming, my grandfather would always go there to buy his supplies even though it was far from his house. They knew each other there, got in loved and thenmoved to the border city of Matamoros, Mexico. In Matamoros my grandfather saw a possibility to raise his family; he believed he needed to get out of his hometown to give his family a better future.
