British Colonialism
Good Afternoon. I would like to present the topic British Colonialism as my presentation exam for the A-level.
I would like to begin by showing two pictures.
This is a player of the Indian National Cricket Team shortly after he had realized his team would win the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. On this next picture you are able see the whole team celebrating andshowing the trophy.
When I see these pictures I ask myself how cricket, this very British sport, became known to people in a country which is almost 6700 km away from Britain.
As you can guess cricket was introduced by the British themselves during their reign in India as it was one of the most important colonies in the British Empire.
Thinking of British Colonialism as a whole, I start askingmyself what influence the British had on their colonies.
This leads to my main question, which i will try to answer throughout this presentation.
What impact did British Colonialism have on its former colonies the United States of America and India?
This map shows us the spread of British colonialism and all the countries ones reigned by the British. At its height in the first quarter of the 20thcentury it covered almost a quarter of the Earth’s total land area and held power over around 458 Million people, making up a fifth of the world’s population at the time. As my main question implies I will focus on the important 13 colonies of America and India throughout my presentation.
In the presentation I would like to first outline the most important steps of British Colonialism in thissection marked with the word “history” before i go over to the comparison of the impact on the United States and India.
When I do, I will use 5 different categories to compare the British influence on the two nations. Starting with politics i will go over law, economy and education and Last but not least i will compare the British influence on sports in both countries.
The comparison will allowme to draw out a conclusion, which hopefully answers my main question.
I will now go over to the history of British colonialism.
In the 15th and 16th century Spain and Portugal had explored the globe and established large overseas empires. Impressed by the great wealth deriving from the colonies, the English began to explore the world themselves and attempted to found different colonies duringthe reign of Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth I in the 15th and the beginning of the 17th century.
The first successful colony was to be founded during King James VI’s reign in 1607 in Jamestown of present day Virginia. Followed by financially more successful colonies in the Caribbean and Asia the British Empire spread and private companies like the renown English East India Company wereestablished, to administer the colonies and overseas trade.
In 1620 Plymouth was founded by puritan religious separatists, the famous Pilgrim fathers and initiated a wave of immigration to the New world by those fleeing religious persecution and seeking a new life in freedom. Other colonies in America were founded and New Netherland was overtaken and renamed New York in 1664 in the course of the Anglo-Dutchwars. The settlers imported European plants, cattle and also diseases, shaping the New continent distinctively.
In 1672 the triangular slave trade was established between America, Africa and England by a charter given to the Royal African Company. Until its abolition in 1807 3.5 million African slaves were transported to the Americas by the British to work in the vast farms in the West Indiesand the southern American colonies, increasing the black population immensly.
After the Scotish attempt of 1698 to establish a settlement on the isthmus of Panama known as the Darien scheme resulted in a financial disaster for Scotland the country and England agreed on a unification. In 1707 with the “Treaty of Union” the Kingdom of Great Britain was formed.
