GEORGE WASHINGTON. FAREWELL ADDRESS.
The text is a political discourse that George Washington wrote on September 19th, 1796 as a farewell to his position as President of United States elected for the third consecutive time.
George Washington, first President of the United States, was a military commander who led his country toindependence and renounced his third re-election. He was born in 1732 and belonged to a distinguished English family, who had come to America in the mid-17th century and had managed to amass a considerable fortune. Listening to the stories of his half-brother, awoke in him an early military vocation and at the age of fourteen wanted to soldier but his mother opposed this. At the age of twenty hebecame head of the family and he inherited a large plantation. Soon distinguished himself in the affairs of the community of Virginia, he was a member of the Episcopal church and candidate to the Chamber of Bourgeois. But he had not forgotten his vocation of soldier, and among his plans was also a brilliant military. Married a widow, had a busy and happy life, although he felt exploited byBritish merchants. In 1758 he became a symbol of the fight against British rule. As head of the Virginia militia forced the French to withdraw from Fort Duquesne. In 1776 he rejoined active service to take Boston, this fact followed the Declaration of Independence. In 1787 the first Constitution of the state was signed and in 1789 he was elected unanimously President of the United States, as wouldhappen in his second term. He refused the salary should charge arguing that he was a simple selfless public servant. As President, Washington ruled respecting the power that the Constitution gave to Congress, he created the Bank of the United States to placate economic problems and a policy to promote the development of the industry. But the design and development of the foreign policy becamea prominent presidential concern and the culmination of his second term, tired of politics and feeling old, decided to retire. In his farewell speech, he called because their compatriots leave aside partisan interests and regional rivalries against the foreign affairs. In 1799 he died of an infection in the throat, for months the nation was in mourning.
Recipients of the address were all thosecitizens, followers, supporters of United States for the third consecutive time elected him as the representative of his country. Originally published in David Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser on September 19 and immediately after reprinted in newspapers across the country. The text begins with a brief explanation of the reason which makes him to decline re-election. He considers that he has practiced his public office in the best possible way and after many years of dedication, pleased with his achievements, he believes appropriate to move away from the political scene. But before his farewell, George Washington appreciates theconfidence and support that you have shown to him at all times and he leaves them some recommendations, as he says in his address “disinterested warnings of a parting friend”.
He advised the national union which constitutes an only people, that he thinks that it is the fundamental pillar for the independence and prosperity as well as for freedom. He tells them that the Union will be strong againstinternal and external enemies of the country, they must show above all his pride in being American, by birth or choice, but they extolling their patriotism.
