Frozen and fast food: Economically profitable but a risk to public health

The effects of fast food extend far beyond its effect on the health of consumers. The economicimpact of the industry is staggering. More than three million people work in fast food in the United States alone. In 2009 the fast food industry spent more than 4.2 billion dollars on advertising.Other effects include environmental harm, poor working conditions and low quality food. In exchange we get cheap, convenient food.

Cheap Food
The positive effect of fast food is that it gives peopleaccess to cheap, convenient food. Since the mid 1970s, the U.S. government has been subsidizing corn and soy heavily. Corn is the basic ingredient of most of the sweetness in fast food. Soy providesmuch of the oil and fat. Both corn and soy are feed for industrially raised beef and chicken. Because of these government subsidies, if you pay taxes, you have already paid for part of your fast foodmeal before you even order it. Consequently, the amount of money you hand the cashier through the drive-through window is significantly less than you would have to pay for a burger and fries were theynot subsidized. In most fast food outlets, you can have that burger in a matter of minutes and you don't even have to leave your car. Fast food is cheap, convenient and -- fast.
