Comparison of the values in society between “The Gulf, my shoulder… North was the horizon” and several readings.

Thesis: The values of the society that are shown in every reading determined the mood of the whole reading.

The values of society are basic and always present in our reality. It determined also how develop is the society in terms of communication with others and interaction.“O Pioneer” sets not only the values of the society it also thanks to this values sets the motivations of the main characters in result it creates the whole mood the story. ”: “Before she knew what she was doing, she had committed herself to that kiss that was at once a boy's and a man's, as timid as it was tender; so like Emil and so unlike any one else in the world. Not until it was over did sherealize what it meant. And Emil, who had so often imagined the shock of this first kiss, was surprised at its gentleness and naturalness.” ( Cather, pp.6). The values are very clear, are love, passion and this travels us to the motivation and understanding of our main characters.
In “The Heart of Darkness” you can see how the mood is intolerance and hostile thanks to the rejection of the white tothe black people. “A lot of people, mostly black and naked, moved about like ants.” (Conrad, pp.27). In this cite you can see how they compare black people with animals.
In “The Mark on the Wall” is a little bit different because it develops on the mind of only one character. But this doesn’t matter that there are not values in society, the values that are reflected in our main charactersymbolized one part of the society of the time that Virginia Wolf want to show. “.... I want to think quietly, calmly, spaciously, never to be interrupted, never to have to rise from my chair, to slip easily from one thing to another, without any sense of hostility, or obstacle. I want to sink deeper and deeper, away from the surface, with its hard separate facts. To steady myself, let me catch hold ofthe first idea that passes” (Wolf, pp.4) So the main value that can be shown is the autocritic, the self-understanding.
Nowadays we live in a world where money can define our values, can define our actions, the materialism is essential part of our cotidianity. These values of materialism are perfectly shown in the Great Gatsby, where the author refers to the money as a other character, in thiscite you can see this “His family were enormously wealthy—even in college his freedom with money was a matter for reproach—but now he’d left Chicago and come East in a fashion that rather took your breath away: for instance, he’d brought down a string of polo ponies from Lake Forest. it was hard to realize that a man in my own generation was wealthy enough to do that.” (Fitzgerald, pp. 5). Thesecite is clue of the thesis, when this character says, “even in college his freedom with was a matter for reproach” says that his all existence in college is referred to the money, his behavior, his values are depended with the money.
A “Rose for Emily” shown us that the main value of the story is rejection, rejection to changes, when Emily lived alone because his father died, she rejects the lifealone. She was always dependent with his father, it was like an addiction. “After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all. A few of the ladies had the temerity to call, but were not received, and the only sign of life about the place was the Negro man--a young man then--going in and out with a market basket.” (Faulkner, pp. 8). Thisway rejection of the death of his father makes the history depressing.
In “A hunger Artist” by Franz Kafka it is really obvious how is it shown my thesis, because thanks to the behavior of society the whole mood of the story is determined. “And if some good-natured person, feeling sorry for him, tried to console him by pointing out that his melancholy was probably caused by fasting, it could...
