Start of the countercultural movement:As the 1960s progressed, the tensions between the old and the new generations grew.
The young started to have political and social conscience, and therefore, they started to criticize the old values(materialism, authoritarianism, racism, sexism...) of their parents as well as the political situation of the time.
Several social movements emerged in order to fight for the liberalist ideas of thenew generation.
Social movements:
The American Civil Rights Movement, a key element of the larger Counterculture movement, involved the use of applied nonviolence to assure that equal rightsguaranteed under the U.S. Constitution would apply to all citizens, because many states illegally denied many of these rights to African Americans.
The New Left is a term used in different countries todescribe left-wing movements that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. They differed from earlier leftist movements that had been more oriented towards labor activism, and instead adopted social activism.The U.S. "New Left" is associated with college campus mass protests and radical leftist movements that demanded the suppression racism and war, more social and gender equality and the creation of newmeasures to help the poor.
The Free Speech movement which fought for the liberty of expression of the youth.
The Anti-War movement created opposition to the Vietnam War. It began in 1964 on UnitedStates College campuses and it used student activism and manifestations as protest methods.
Feminist movement challenged the role of women as full-time homemakers in industrial society, andenvironmentalism emerged in order to stop the pollution caused by the growing industry.
