Terms & Names

Irrigation: They dug irrigation ditches that carried river water to their fields and allow them to produce a surplus of crops.

City-State: Acity-state functioned much as an independent country does today. Controlled surrounding cities.

Polytheism: Sumerians believed that many gods controlled the various forces in nature. (Belief inmany gods)

Empire: Brings together several peoples, nations, or previously independent states under the control of a ruler.

Mummification: Egyptians preserved a dead person’s body by embalmingand drying the corpse to prevent it from decaying.

Hieroglyphics: “Sacred carving”. Crude pictographs were the earliest form of writing in Egypt, but scribes quickly developed a more flexible writingsystem called hieroglyphics.

Subcontinent: Geographers refer to the land mass that includes what are now India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh as a subcontinent.

Monsoons: Season winds calledmonsoons dominate India’s climate.

Mandate of Heaven: To justify conquests, Zhou leaders developed over time into a broader view that royal authority came from heaven.

Feudalism: Dynastycontrolled lands that stretched far. Nobles or lords are granted the use of lands that legally belong to the king. In return, Nobles owe loyalty and military service to the king and protection to the peoplewho lives on their estates.
