The Endocrine System
I. What is the Endocrine System?
It regulates short-term and long-term activities by sending chemicals throughout the body. Long-term changes includegrowth and development. This system is made up of glands that produces or releases chemicals into the blood called hormones. Each hormone affects specific target cells.
II. Endocrine SystemRegulators
a. Hypothalamus – part of the brain that link the nervous system and the
endocrine system. It control sleep, hunger and otherprocess in the body.
b. Pituitary gland – called “master gland” ; it is about a size of a pea and is
located below the hypothalamus working together tocontrol many body activities.
III. Hormone Levels Controls
Once a hormone is secreted, it travels from the endocrine gland that produced it, through the bloodstream to the cellsdesigned to receive its message. When hormone levels reach a certain normal amount, the endocrine system helps the body to keep that level of hormone in the blood. When not, the Endocrine Systemuses a process called Negative Feedback, where the amount of hormone in the blood reaches certain level and sends signals that stop the release of that hormone.
IV. Glands of the Endocrine System* Thyroid gland: produces thyroxine hormone to control energy reactions
* Parathyroid glands: regulate the blood’s calcium levels
* Adrenal glands: release adrenaline, which triggers aresponse to emergencies or excitement
* Pineal gland: it secretes melatonin to help regulate when you sleep
* Pancreas: produces the hormones insulin and glucagon, which control the blood’sglucose level
* Hypothalamus: links the nervous and endocrine systems and controls the pituitary gland
