Elements of Poetry

Complete using the Elements of Poetry PowerPoint. DUE Thursday 21/2 y 6pm.

I. Characteristics of Poetry
A. Of the 8 characteristics listed which do youconsider to be the most important? Why?
* Poetry is the art of expressing one’s thoughts in verse.
* It uses few words to convey its message.
* It is meant to be read aloud.
* Poetryarouses our emotions.
* Poems use imagery figures of speech to explain or to create a mental picture or idea
* These suggest action or mood.
* Many poems have a specific rhyme scheme.
*Poems can rhymes or not rhyme.

II. Lines
B. Are all lines in a poem a complete sentence? Why do you think that is?
* Yes

III. Stanza
C. What is a stanza?
* A group oflines.

D. Why do poets use stanzas?
* Give poems a structure.

IV. Orange, month, silver and purple do not rhyme with any other word. Can you think of others?

E. Many poems rhyme, but not all of them. Why do you think poets use rhyme in their poems?
* To add a musical sound to their poems.

F. What is rhyme scheme?
* Is a patternof rhymes in a poem.

V. Rhythm
G. What is rhythm (as it’s used in poetry)?
* Pattern of beats or a series of stressed and unstressed syllables in poem.

H. How does it affectthe way you read the poem aloud?
* nothing

When you read poetry, follow the normal pauses/breaks you would take when reading anything else. In other words, you don’t need to pause at the endof each line, only when there’s punctuation like a period or comma.

VI. Free Verse
I. How is a free verse poem different that other poem?

* These not have a regular rhyme, rhythm,and form.

J. When writing poetry, would you prefer to write free verse or poetry with
more structure? Why?

* Free verse, because is easier.
