Páginas: 5 (1114 palabras) Publicado: 19 de mayo de 2012
In the story “The Two Grandmothers” the author (olive Senior) tells us a story (through the eyes of a little girl that grows in to a teenager) that shows how a person’s morality can be affected and changed based on the experiences this little girl has with the other two important characters of the story, her Grandmothers.
Meanwhile the author draws the social-economic problems of the girl’scountry (Jamaica), not only showing how this affects her daily life, but also helping us to see the differences between her Grandmothers in the social-economic, racial and more importantly in the moral differences of this two characters, through the story we are able to see that it’s the moral differences of both her Grandmothers which have a bigger impact on this girl as she grows.
The fact thatthe difference between “Grandma Del and Towser” when it comes to morals, race, and their social-economic place in society is so antagonistic is probably based on Olive Senior´s experience on the Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of the West Indies, in this institute she edited the journal Social and Economic Studies, and we can clearly see how all this aspects change thegirls behavior as the story develops, first she starts like any little girl excited to see her Grandma Del who seems to live in a rural environment because she has baby chickens and her Granddaughter helps gather eggs. It seems to be that the hole town where the little girl´s Grandmother live is full of farm animals as the author wrote “Mr. SonSon next door has baby pigs” making a clear referenceto the style of life this people probably have living out of farm animals, another reference that makes clear that Grandma Del is poor is the one olive Senior wrote about Del´s house, “pretty little house with white lace curtains at all windows”.
The main character is also very innocent in the first half of the story, she wants her neighborhood to be more like her Grandma Del´s town whereeveryone says hi to each other and they walk through town where they know all their neighbors, she goes to church and loves all the presents her Grandma makes her with her own hands, her innocence is clear when she said, “Eulalie fell and they don´t know what is to be done. Mummy, why are they so worried that Eulalie fell? She didn´t break her leg or anything for she is walking up and down past the houseall they long and looks perfectly fine to me.” She doesn´t understand that Eulalie got pregnant.
Her second Grandmother, Elaine is so different she finds her amusing, she makes the little girl call her “Towser”, she is a more modern woman than her other Grandma she has a bigger house with electricity and is “almost white” not like Grandma Del who is obviously form African roots, she datesseveral guys rich white men and is racist she tells the little girl she doesn’t like her hair and skin color unlike Del who thinks she is a beautiful brown girl with gorgeous hair.
Towser is also less a conservative type of woman, she uses make-up goes out on dates at nights, this is something the girl doesn´t like at first but with time she stars liking the presents Towser gives her, and she lovesthe stories about Miami, this and a traumatic incident where she gets called a “nigger” by her cousin Maureen after this incident she gets mad and changes become easy to see as she wants to get her hair straightened a lighter skin and doesn´t want to go to Grandma Del´s house because she wants to see the show Dallas and go to charm school.
Like The Two Grandmothers the play Return To Paradisedevelops a story with a strong social-economic and racial subject, taking place in Jamaica on a middle class house in its back porch, Annie an old woman walks to a house where she used to work for the owners, she is happy to see it probably making her forget her actual problems and just delighted on the past memories of a happier time, she talks to a Mrs. Rogers who isn´t very interested in what...
