Clinical Vs Forensic Interviewing

1.- Using your text and class notes, discuss the similarities and the differences between clinical assessment versus clinical treatment interviews in regard to:

a) Goals/purposes:
Both clinical assessment and clinical treatment interviews share the objective of obtaining relevant, reliable and valid information aboutinterviews and there problems. Both will be affected by three main factors: the characteristic of the interviewer and the interviewee, the message components and the climate of the interview.
Both share common objectives. To establish rapport, to facilitate communication, to communicate genuineness and empathy; to attend, listen and reflect feelings and contents, together information, to allow theinterviewee to revel concerns and preoccupations and to asses the interviewees verbal and non verbal communication.
The clinical assessment interview is not an open-ended, client-centered, counseling session. Instead there is an agenda to be covered. It pursues the objectives of obtaining relevant information and to arrive at a decision, be it diagnoses the determination of the need for referralor the type of treatment of remediation needed. Also, this is to cover specific content areas (developmental history, social history, mental status evaluation and analysis of problem behavior). Finally, limit contact, usually to one or two sessions.
Diversely, the clinical treatment interview pursues the objectives of relieving the emotional distress of the client, enabling insight, fosteringbehavioral, cognitive, and affective changes. It uses using approaches geared to therapeutic goals and limited contact to the time require to achieve treatment goals, which varies widely from weeks to months or years, depending on type of therapy and problem.

b) Procedures:
In both cases the interviewer should pay attention to the content of interview and the interviewee’s style. In both typesof interview, the interviewers gather information and continually assess the interviewees thinking, affect, perceptions, and attributions.
The assessment interview should follow the following steps: (1) to establish rapport with the child and parents; (2) to identify major problem areas;(3) to obtain child developmental history; (4) to find out about any prior assessments and treatments; (5)to learn about the current family situation; (6) to obtain information about child expediencies and behavior at home, school and community; (7) to evaluate the child and family needs and motivation for help and coping skills to generate hypothesis; (8) to evaluate the extend of the problem; (9) to arrive at a tentative hypothesis of the child problems; (10) to answerer the referral questions;and (11) to develop recommendations.

Treatment interviews the interviewer uses specialized techniques to reach therapeutic goals. The focus may be on problem solving, cognitive assignments, or perceiving shades and degrees of feelings and on responding to the expressions of feeling. The procedures in the treatment interviews will vary widely depending of the theoretical orientation of thetreating professional (e.g.: psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, existential-humanistic, client-centered, gestalt, etc.)

c) Documentation requirements:
Regarding documentation requirements, the clinical assessment interviewee maintains raw data, written records and copies of audio tapes and video tapes and copies of the reports performer.
On the other hand, documentation requirementconcerning treatment interviews consist in a progress note summarizing what happen in the session in term of treatment progress. These progress notes will be kept in a treatment chart along with other records of the treatment such as: the intake report, the initial treatment plan, the treatment plan reviews and the discharge summery.
