RESUMEN
Una de las características más notables del proceso de asentamiento humano en América Latina y el Caribe ha sido la
tendencia cada vez mayor a la urbanización. Esto conllevó obviamente, a una aguda concentración de la población,
generando nuevos sistemas urbanos al interior de cada país e incluso en las regiones. Para poder entender yevaluar
las consecuencias de estos procesos es necesario investigar los cambios del uso del suelo en áreas metropolitanas
grandes; evaluar los impactos de estos cambios en los ecosistemas y recursos regionales; aplicar tecnologías para el
monitoreo, análisis y predicción de tasas, patrones e impactos de cambios del terreno como consecuencia de causas
naturales y humanas. Atendiendo a estasnecesidades se concibió esta investigación como parte integrante de un
macro proyecto el cual planteó, como principal objetivo de estudio cuantificar y delimitar el crecimiento de la región del
Gran Mendoza, a partir del empleo de técnicas de interpretación visual de imágenes satelitales LANDSAT TM de
diferentes fechas bajo técnicas de análisis estadístico y multitemporal La metodología empleada sebasó en la
clasificación visual sobre pantalla de las imágenes, segmentando las áreas de entrenamiento en grupos de píxeles con
determinados patrones radiométricos y estadísticos relacionados al tipo de consolidación de los usos urbanos.
Posteriormente se correlaciono el resultado con los datos validados en campo y se analizo la variación espacial final
presente a través de un SIG. Lacuantificación del crecimiento urbano por este método mostró un incremento del 40%,
equivalente a 9513 hectáreas, el cual evidencia la fuerte tendencia del abandono de áreas tradicionalmente agrícolas
por nuevos asentamientos urbanos, representando básicamente por una clase social económica y educativamente
distintiva.

ABSTRACT
One of the most remarkable characteristics of the process of settlement inLatin America and Caribbean every greater
time to the urbanization has been the tendency. This entailed obvious, to an acute concentration of the population,
generating new urban systems to the interior of each country and even in the regions. In order to be able to understand
and to evaluate the consequences of these processes it is necessary to investigate the changes of the use of the
groundin great metropolitan areas; to evaluate the impacts of these changes in the ecosystems and regional resources;
to apply technologies for the monitoreo, analysis and prediction of rates, patterns and impacts of changes of the land as
a result of natural and human causes. Taking care of these necessities this investigation like integral part of a macro
project was conceived which raised, asmain training target to quantify and to delimit the growth of the region of the
Great Mendoza, from the use of techniques of vl interpretation of satelite images LANDSAT TM of different dates under
techniques from statistical and multitemporal analysis. The used methodology was based on the visual classification of
the images, segmenting the areas of training in groups of pixels with certainrelated radiometric and statistical patterns
to the type of consolidation of the urban uses. Later I correlate the result with the data validated in field and I analyze the
space variation final present through a SIG. The quantification of the urban growth by this method showed an increase
