When we decided to do our company project on the Furet du Nord, we knew that we would have to study its main competitor, the FNAC.
The FNAC is an international entertainment retail chain offeringcultural and consumer electronics products originally founded by André Essel and Max Théret. It is the largest retailer of its kind in France. Its headquarters are located in Clichy, a suburb inthe north-west of Paris.
Fnac stores stock a range of products from Audio, Books, CDs, Computer software and hardware, DVDs, Televisions and Video Games. Some stores also operate services ofPhotography and Ticket sales. The company also offers a wide selection of higher-end consumer products positioning themselves above discount retailers.
In 2008, the company has stores in France,Belgium, Brazil, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan (where it is now known under the name “Fayaque”). That’s the main difference with our company, because the Furet du Nord has storesonly in the Norht of France.
In 2008, the FNAC has 78 stores in 56 french cities, and 65 selling points in 8 countries (16 in Spain, 7 in Belgium, 13 in Portugal, 12 in Brazil, 7 in Italy, 6 inSwitzerland, 2 in Taiwan and 2 in Greece). It has also a website where you can buy products online (www.fnac.com), and a music, videos, videogames and softwares online downloading website.
The FNACmanaged to have such a success thanks to the services they offer to the customers : tests of many products with the “Laboratoires Tests”, services of photos printing, services of travels selling,tickets for different events, concerts and shows.

The Furet du Nord hasalso other little competitors such as specialized shops in the cities the Furet is established. Indeed, there are many bookshops in Lille but they don’t succeed in having big market shares.
