many school are trying to reduce their to reduce their carbon footprint and one has already become carbon neutral
dalton school in gateshead which is the north of englandworked out how much energy it used. they found out how much carbon and orther greenhouse gases were produced by school. fro example, techer and pupils mea sured how much energythey used for their daily journeys to school. in the past, they sent all their waste to a landfill site so they decided to look at recycling. now, all their old paper isrecycled and leftover food is used to make compost for the school gardens.

on a visit to the school, a climate expert told the students that a litre of petrol preduced theequivalent of six baths full of carbon dioxide. as a consequence a big effort was made by the school to reduce its carbon footprint. now,60% of students walk to school 25% cycle10% use public transport and only 5% travel by car.however,the school still produces seven hundred tonnes of greehouse gases a year so the school now gives 7.50 to a climatecharity for each tonne.
he climate charity, which works with lots of school sells carbon offsets. the money given by the school is used to pay for tree planting, low energy lightbulbs and cheaper more
efficient fuels in poorer countries.
some people say that carbon offsets arent a good idea. the problem is a that rich countries whith use the mostcarbon donot really change they just pay some money and keep doing the same things. giving money to poorer countries wont solve the problems because it only moves themsomewhere else. howerver, some green charities say that carbon offsetting makes people in europe think about climate change and as a result they help people in poorer countries
