Gay Rights
BC 301 “Critical Thinking”
December 09, 2011
Our essay is about homosexual’s rights. We segregate the subject into four subjects which we think are the most important, we focused on society, religion, marriage and adoption. All of our thoughts and beliefs are related and we all are in favor of these rights and we think that they deserve to be treated equally and have theright to get married because who are we to judge? If two people are in love they deserve to be happy together, on the other hand our strongest argument for being in favor is that do not matter the preferences of the persons, but their feelings and good actions and intentions, is because of this, that we think positive about the subject.
Society (Discrimination)
Sexualorientation discrimination includes being treated differently or harassed because of the real or perceived sexual orientation -- whether gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual ("Sexual Orientation Discrimination: Your Rights", n.d.).
There are several types of sexual orientation discrimination, the most common is in the workplace. This type of discrimination may be illegal. Although federal laws protect people fromworkplace discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, religion, sex, age, and disability, there is no federal law that specifically outlaws workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the private sector. (Federal government workers are protected from such discrimination.) Attempts to pass federal legislation that would outlaw sexual orientation discrimination in privateworkplaces have been unsuccessful to date, although more members of Congress support such a bill each year ("Sexual Orientation Discrimination: Your Rights", n.d.).
There are other types of sexual orientation discrimination such as: discrimination by civil and merchant organizations, discrimination in public places, discrimination in housing, discrimination in the authorization of loans, discrimination by government institutions and discrimination in educational institutions.
One example of discrimination in educational institutions was seen in the public high school CBTIS 20 in Sabinas, Coahuila, Mexico. This institution discriminated and expelled Martin Premmert (who came from Sweden to study high school in that institution) just because the principal noticed [Martin] was gay. That wasunfair to him because in Mexico it is not allowed to deny free education (M. Premmert, personal communication, 2010).
This was just an unfair fact but it is true that in Mexico, same-sax acceptation has evolved. We will see why. During the past few years, Mexico has been passing through the process of social progress. Homosexuals have been granted the right to make a couple and marry in Mexico City, and in the state of Coahuila, homosexuals are free to have civil unions.
In Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrad, leftist Mexico City Mayor, was the one who was in charge of signing this act that enabled the gay community the right for marriage. This has given this mayor a rise in political numbers since the gay community is growing drastically. Many politicians today are trying to benefit themselves andare using this situation a benefiting homosexuals so that they can be elected somehow.
In Mexico City, since the law took effect in March 2010, 88 lesbian and gay couples married as of April 5 and 37 weddings were scheduled from April to June. Gay marriage is not the only thing that was legalized in Mexico, adoption was also legalized and is the problem that causes more controversy since manyheterosexuals are not against the fact that they are now able to marry, but are against homosexual adaption and are not willing to accept it. (Johnson R., Gay Life in Mexico, 2010).
Since Mexico has progressed into a more human country, it has been marked as a great destination for gay vacationing. Mexico City specially the “Zona Rosa” is one of the most progressive regions of Mexico....
