• Did the scientists who handle the Genie case apply the Critical Thinking Guidelines?
The Genie case was a very delicatecase back in 1970, that consisted of a girl who was locked in her room for her whole life until she was ‘rescued’ by her mother at the age of 13. Because of this lock-up, she barely knew how to speak.Genie only had 20 words in her vocabulary, and most of them were negative. So, she became and experiment throughout the United States to many scientists. To help them the research they performed onher, they used the Critical Thinking Guidelines of Psychology.
Their main concern was if she was ever going to acquire language. They wondered this because at the age of 13 she still couldn’tspeak. By having this doubt they were using the Critical Thinking Guideline of ask questions. They also defined what language means to see, in specific detail, if Genie does have or has not this skill.This proves the use of the Guideline define your terms. The Guideline “avoid emotional reasoning” was used, but with a negative result. The scientists were so into Genies case, they forgot she ashuman. So, they used her as a science experiment and she couldn’t really accomplish to connect to society. The fact that she could ever speak again or not was a hypothesis made by her doctors, and it wasthat she couldn’t, due to the fact that people can only learn language until a certain age. Here they over simplified, but they shouldn’t have had gotten to that conclusion without analyzing first.Genie didn’t fully succeed in verbal acquisition, so they decided to teach her how to speak trough sign language. By this they were considering other interpretations. Another example of howused the Guidelines was when they tolerated uncertainty.
