BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY: GEORGE ORWELL



An inveterate critic of social injustice, English novelist, essayist and journalist, Eric Arthur Blair better known by his pen name George Orwell wasconsidered perhaps the twentieth century's best chronicler of English culture. This clever and controversial man was born in Mothri, Bengal, in 1903 and was the second child of Richard Walmesley Blair and IdaMabel Limonzin. His father was a civil servant in the opium department and his mother was the daughter of a tea-merchant in Burma. In 1904 Orwell moved with his mother and sister to England, where heattended Eton. Since childhood he always disagreed with many issues including the English class system and he used the college periodicals to express his ideas, opinions and critics.

At the age ofnineteen, instead of accepting a scholarship to a university, Orwell decided to follow family tradition and, in 1922, went to Burma as assistant district superintendent in the Indian Imperial Police.His imperial policeman's life gave him considerable responsibilities for a young man and when he was posted farther east in the Delta to Twante as a sub-divisional officer he was responsible for thesecurity of some 200,000 people but yet from childhood he had wanted to become a writer and thus he was to recount his experiences and his reactions to imperial rule in his novel “Burmese Days” and intwo brilliant autobiographical sketches, “Shooting an Elephant” an exceptional descriptive essay where he points out every detail of the death of the elephant and “A Hanging,” a narrative essaywhere he tells one of his experiences in the military killing a condemned man. Here he lets us see that it is not acceptable to kill a healthy human being but he had to do his job. Both essays arecertainly classics of expository prose.
