“Synthesis of an aspirin”
• Objective: Create a synthesized aspirin.
• Hypothesis: We can synthesize an aspirin with the use of an acetic acid, that is a carboxylic acid, andsalicylic acid, which is an organic acid.
• Materials and reagents:
Materials Reagents
Erlenmeyer flask
Filter paper
Pipette
Funnel
Baker
Ice
Tray
Hot plate 1.5-Salicylic acid
3ml-Acetic acid200ml-Hot water
20ml-Cold water
5 drops-H2SO4
• Procedure:
1. - Add 1.5 g of salicylic acid to 3 ml of acetic acid and then 5 drops of Sulfuric acid in a Erlenmeyer flask and mix them.2. - Put the mixture of the Erlenmeyer flask in brands in a baker with water previously boiler and let it 5 minutes.
3. - After 5 minutes waiting take theErlenmeyer flask and add 20 ml of cold water.
4. - Put the mixture on a ice bucket.
5. - Filter the mixture with the filter paper.
6. - Take away the filterpaper and let the product dry 1 day.
• Results:
CH3CO2H + C6H4(OH)COOH C9H8O4

If we have acetic acid and we add salicylic acid to that and then we add sulfuric acid as catalyze we can obtainan acetylsalicylic acid.
• Discussion:
During this practice we combined a carboxylic acid (acetic acid, which is the main component of the vinegar and is even known as glacial acetic acid) andan organic acid (salicylic acid which is a monohydroxybenzoic acid, a type of phenolic acid and a beta hydroxy acid) using as catalyst sulfuric acid.
According to the observations we can determinethat acetylsalicylic acid, also known by trade name Aspirin, is an acetyl derivative that is produced by the combination of acetic acid and salicylic acid.
“The aspirin is a substance very important...
