Course Description:
 
The Academic Writing Skills I course will prepare students to produce written papers for academicpurposes. This course will cover resources needed to write according to APA Style guidelines detailed in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. This course will help students to use the writing process when producing academic papers. This course will visit different types of American and British Literature to analyze contrast and research

Course Prerequisites:
 
TOEFLiBT with a minimum score of 61 points or equivalent in the English placement test of your university.
 
Learning Objectives Stated in Terms of Learning Outcomes:
 
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
 
* Identify the importance of academic integrity and its relationship with plagiarism.
* Contrast between writing for academic purpose and informal writing.
*Describe the basic rules of APA style.
* Recognize the writing process stages.
* Apply graphic organizers in the pre-writing stage.
* Define the purpose, audience and organization of an academic paper.
* Identify the paragraph structure, topic and support sentences.
* Explain the different types of essays.
* Practice the writing skills to produce academic papers.
*Identify and use basic strategies for summarizing, quoting and paraphrasing research.
* Use the basic rules of APA editorial style when writing academic documents.
* Effectively use the work of others in writing, including references of sources and citation methods.

Course Assignments:
 
Discussion posting guidelines: To meet the class participation requirements, students are required to post one original reply to the weekly discussion questions and two replies to classmates’ opinions. This is to be done in theweekly Discussion areas of the class. Comments like “I agree” or “nice job” do not count as undergraduate-level postings. You are to reference any works from which ideas or quotations are drawn, following APA style format for references.
 
Assignments: Assignments should be submitted to the eCollege DropBox. Due dates will be given to you by your teacher. An Assignment Checklist, organized by eachweek, will also be provided within the Course Information area for the convenience of those who want a physical printout to track their completion of assignments. All assignments need to have the APA style format so that instructor can grade them.
 
Group assignment: Everyone will be assigned to a three to five person group, in order to work on a collaborative assignment. You can access yourgroup in the Group area of the classroom by clicking on the Groups button. This is located at the very bottom of the Course Home page.
